After Tau comes to a realization about their sexuality, it sets in motion a cascade of thoughts and emotions in Tumelo – nothing will ever be the same between them.
Reluctantly Queer
Akosua Adoma Owusu / Ghana/USA / 2016 / 6 min
This epistolary short film invites us into the unsettling life of a young Ghanaian man struggling to reconcile his love for his mother with his love for same-sex desire amid the increased tensions incited by same-sex politics in Ghana. Focused on a letter that is ultimately filled with hesitation and uncertainty, Reluctantly Queer both disrobes and questions what it means to be queer for this man in this time and space.
Fluorescent Sin
Amirah M. Tajdin / Kenya / 2011 / 8 min
At Nairobi’s iconic central station, a lithe, majestic drag queen sits on a bench, lightly crying, smoking a cigarette, and descending into a breakdown through a poetic soliloquy. Tajdin challenges our ideas of beauty, sexuality, and Kenyan attitudes to ’otherness’, suggesting that being caught between two places might not be a bad thing.
BMB
Heidi (Jade) Ramírez / Spain / 2021 / 7 min
BMB stands for Black, Muslim, and Bi – three identities that director Dafne C. explores in this personal, experimental short film. The film is a compilation of four poems by Dafne C. that move from their struggle against prejudice to self-acceptance and emancipation.
