If I Had the Power

If all LGBTQIA refugees had their own anthem…
What would it sound like? What would it be about?
In all the years that Newcomers Youth has existed, we have realized how music, song and dance give enormous strength and comfort to our members. Many of these young people share similar experiences and are on a journey towards self-love, freedom and taking back the power of their own lives. The music becomes like a channel to strengthen the group and to build a community.
All we want to do is love and live free. Every single line in that song has an important meaning. Having to flee as a young person and leave an entire life behind to come to a new country is something that requires courage and hope for the future. But after a long asylum process – where it is not certain that you will be believed – it is easy to feel hopeless. Who hadn’t? Therefore, we wanted to produce an anthem. A fight song. To give our members a platform to celebrate their own and each other’s strength. And inspire those who hear the song to join our fight for equality and justice in the asylum process.
The text in If I had the power is based on the experiences of our members. Producers Haris Eloy & Alexandra Politidis Palm, sound and lyrics by Stefan Storm, song by Michael and film by Jad Nehmeh
