Lecture: Queer Waiting\/Queerpanorama<\/h2>\n

Queerpanorama (2025) centers on a young gay man (Arm Anatphikorn) who moves from <\/span>hookup to hookup, using each encounter as an opportunity to inhabit the persona of a <\/span>previous partner. The film explores identity and intimacy and is set against the bustling <\/span>backdrop of the urban landscape of Hong Kong. It is only through inhabiting the guise of past <\/span>lovers that the film\u2019s protagonist, while waiting to find his true self, can feel fully authentic.<\/span><\/p>\n

This screening is introduced by Oscar von Seth (Centre for Gender Research, Uppsala <\/span>University and King\u2019s College London), whose research on \u201cqueer waiting\u201d mirrors the film\u2019s <\/span>themes. von Seth\u2019s current project (funded by the Swedish Research Council) suggests that <\/span>waiting is an inherently queer experience. Queers wait for a variety of reasons. Historically, <\/span>we have waited for social and political recognition like marriage equality and anti-<\/span>discrimination laws. During the AIDS crisis we waited for a cure. Nowadays, following <\/span>reactionary right-wing political projects in countries around the world, queers wait, with <\/span>dread, for their hard-won legal rights to be taken away. Also, queers often wait to be seen <\/span>for who they truly are, a queer form of waiting that echoes throughout Queerpanorama.<\/span><\/p>\n

Queerpanorama was nominated for the Teddy Award for LGBTQ-themed cinema at the <\/span>Berlinale in 2025. It was also nominated at the Champs-\u00c9lys\u00e9es Film Festival in 2025. Oscar <\/span>von Seth\u2019s book about queer waiting will be published by Bloomsbury in 2026.<\/span><\/p>\n
