Black Carnations and Baltic Queer History at CFF

Inspired by the exhibition Black Carnation by Konstantin Zhukov at the Centre for Photography (CFF), Cinema Queer presents an evening dedicated to Baltic queerness. In his artistic practice, Zhukov explores Latvia’s queer history, focusing on the Soviet era and the period immediately following the country’s liberation. With Black Carnation, he further develops this interest through new works. The evening features a specially curated program of Baltic video art in the CFF garden, alongside a performative reading with Konstantin Zhukov.

About *Black Carnation: Case Study No. 2

Black Carnation: Case Study No. 2 continues the artist’s exploration of queer history in his native Latvia. This iteration examines oral histories regarding the first gay parties organized in the early 1990s, shortly after the country gained independence from the Soviet Union. These experiences bear witness to a broader process of liberation and freedom within a Baltic context—a narrative that is often overlooked yet holds crucial significance.
