The first film in Gregg Araki’s ”Teen Apocalypse” trilogy is a feverish mix of punk nihilism and stoic irony that gives Jean-Luc Godard’s classic Masculine Feminine a bold, queer twist. Through fifteen fragmentary episodes, Totally F***ed Up throws itself headfirst into the lives of a group of disillusioned queer teenagers in Los Angeles, who form a kind of improvised family as they navigate desire and heartbreak, rejection from society and family, and the alienation that comes with growing up gay in an era marked by unforgiving moralism.
