Blatte Queers

BlatteQueers is a project run by Interfem. The term BlatteQueers originate from the idea of addressing power structures / oppression against people based on gender, gender identity, sexuality and racialization. The term has been used to make visible how individuals and groups resist and how power and resistance are expressed. In other words, the term is not meant to define people but rather describe concepts. If you are not racialised as non-white, you can instead say BQ in film.

BlatteQueers in film is now working on a new project that aims to strengthen and highlight experiences from LGBTQI + people who are exposed to and risk being exposed to racism in the film industry. We work to increase representation and change norms and power structures. The idea is to enable a deeper dialogue with people within the industry who want to contribute to change. We strive to address how the Swedish film industry rarely confronts Sweden’s racist and hetero-sexist present and history, within the industry and ”on the screen”.

BlatteQueers in film a collection of stories from young filmmakers produced during the years 2015-2017, the project continues in 2020-2021. In this exhibiton you can take part of a selection of BlatteQueers in the film’s work.

The BQ test
The BQ test is created by BlatteQueers in film. Do our test by writing down as many examples of films and series with QPOC in the main cast as you can think of. The test is inspired by the Bechdel test and the Chavez Perez test.

Short films
This collection of short films produced by BlatteQueers in film represents young LGBTQI+ girls and non-binary youth who are racialised as non-white. The films address young queer peoples everyday life, which alternates longing, friendship, hope, challenges and resistance. The idea is to challenge stereotypical and narrow narratives that often misrepresents this target group with diverse experiences.

Do you understand what I mean? (9 min)

“IF WE HAD THE POWER”
“If We Had the Power” is a collection of campaign films made by Newcomers Youth. The films collectively reveal the way power is abused on young LGBTQI asylum seekers in Sweden by the government and government agencies regulating migration laws and policies.

The aim of the campaign is to address the mistrust and mistreating of young LGBTQI asylum seekers in Sweden who are subject to systematic racism and homo, bi, and transphobia. The campaign offers a way forward by presenting recommendations made by LGBTQI asylum-seeking youth to politicians, decision-makers, and other relevant actors within the asylum and migration process in Sweden.

The campaign films are real-life stories and are told by LGBTQI youth who are or have been in an asylum process. Each month a new short film episode is released with a new person that tells their story. ”Two Years Left” and ”Like I See Myself” are the first episodes of the campaign.
