Haider is the youngest son in a traditional Pakistani family and he is married to Mumtaz. Both are bothered by the gendered demands within the family and when Haider takes a job as a backup dancer in a Bollywood-style burlesque, he quickly becomes infatuated with the strong-willed trans woman who runs the show.

Joyland is warm and loving feature film debut by Saim Sadiq. It premiered at Cannes where it was awarded both the Queer Palm and the Un Certain Regard. In Pakistan however, it was banned but after a social media campaign it has been screened in most regions.
