Barbara Forever explores the films, archive and cultural impact of the pioneering filmmaker Barbara Hammer. In this documentary, director Brydie O’Connor uses archival footage, as well as Barbara’s own voice, to weave a kinetic tapestry, to deep dive into her history, identity and life. Deeply concerned with those who are remembered and those who are not, Barbara recorded her life, body and lovers, all through her very lesbian point of view. With affection and care, the film guides us through the feminist and queer movements in 1970s San Francisco, the male-dominated New York art world of the 1980s, the New Queer Cinema movement of the 1990s, and expanded LGBTQIA+ representation in art and culture in the 2000s.
